Jack Sparrow seemed to have lost some of his sense of humour, and for that, the eagerly anticipated fourth film of the highly successful franchise lost some of its magic. While Jack Sparrow is still a funny man, just not as funny as he once was, the lack of his previously effortless humour, coupled with the lack of recurring familiar faces from the previous films sufficed to ultimately deem the film a disappointment to any Pirates fan, particularly action lovers. Then again, none of the sequels of the first film of the franchise were able to live up to its standards. However, the film continues to entertain with the introduction of the enchanting mermaids and the romantic subplot that goes with it, that of a handsome and righteous young man and the femme fatale-turned-damsel in distress whom he saves. Long story short, the film does not live up to the expectations of the fans who have followed the franchise for years, but is nonetheless an entertaining, albeit slow-moving, film which introduces new elements to the world of pirates which fans would not want to miss.
My rating: 3.0/5 stars (TALK-o-meter: “Okay, I guess? Could be better.”)
