Heads up, Hugh Jackman and James Marsden; there is a new hottie in the X-Men block!

Channing Tatum will take on the role of Gambit-slash-Remy LeBeau in an X-Men spin-off, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed to Total Film at the Days of Future Past premiere in London.

Gambit was previously portrayed by Taylor Kitsch (of John Carter and Battleship flop fame) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, multiple sources point to Tatum getting a standalone spinoff, and his version of the card-tossing Ragin’ Cajun will likely be introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse.

“He’s a rogue, Channing. He’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. And he can handle the action, we all know that,” Donner said about what made Tatum ideal for the (literally) explosive mutant ,”He’ll be great for Gambit.”

Donner also pointed several background similarities between Tatum and the Louisiana native Gambit.

“And he’s a Southerner, too,” Donner said of Tatum, “He’s not from New Orleans, but he is a Southerner. He understands that world. And you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”

Indeed, Alabama-born Tatum grew up in Mississippi and Florida and is a Southerner true and true.

Tatum also mentioned in an interview at Comic Con that Gambit was his favourite superhero because of possible similar ethnic affiliations.

“My dad’s from Louisiana, so Creole blood is very deep in my veins,” Tatum said, though he might have mistaken ‘Creole’ for ‘Cajun’.

With Tatum as Gambit, the X-Men franchise is surely going to be heating up… in every sense of the word.
